Alert : QR Code Scams

Updated on 27 June 2025.

QR Code ScamsThe use of QR codes has become widespread across many sectors, but fraudsters are taking advantage by distributing malicious fake codes. This scam targets restaurants, parking lots, events, and public services. Here’s how to avoid falling for it.

Fraudulent QR Codes

QR codes are placed on posters, payment terminals, or restaurant tables: they redirect users to fake websites designed to steal banking data or install malware.

How it works

Scammers print and stick their own QR codes on official surfaces or replace originals. When the victim scans the code, they land on a phishing page or fraudulent site, often almost identical to the real one.
Warning signs: QR code on a poorly attached sticker, landing page asking for banking info, spelling errors, or no security certificate.

Some tips:

  • 📱 Before scanning, check that the QR code is not a sticker or overlay on the original surface.
  • 🔗 On the landing page, check the web address before entering any details.
  • 🛡️ Never enter personal or banking information after scanning an unknown QR code.
  • 🚫 If in doubt, cancel the transaction or ask a staff member for help.
  • 📢 Warn your friends and family about this growing scam.

Conclusion

Be cautious with any QR code, even in trusted locations. If you’re scammed or in doubt, report the incident at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
