Alert : Online Ticket Scam
Updated on 28 June 2025.
The resale of concert, show, or sports event tickets attracts scammers who exploit high demand by offering fake tickets or diverting payments. This fraud peaks with major events and can cause heavy losses for consumers. Here’s how to avoid falling for it.
Fake Tickets and Fraudulent Sites
Cut-price tickets circulate on social networks, forums, or unofficial platforms. Once payment is made, the victim never receives a valid ticket or discovers the ticket has already been used.
How it works
Scammers create fake ticketing websites or impersonate individuals. They use real images and hard-to-trace payment methods to reassure the victim, then disappear after the sale.
Warning signs: no legal information on the site, prices too low, payment by wire transfer or cash mandate, no official purchase confirmation.
Some tips:
- 🎟️ Always buy your tickets from official sites or authorized resellers.
- 🔍 Check the web address and site reputation before any purchase.
- 💳 Use secure payment methods (credit card, PayPal) and refuse cash or anonymous transfers.
- 📩 Request official confirmation and check the barcode on the organizer’s site.
- 🚫 Never share your ticket online or on social media.
Conclusion
A bargain ticket or purchase outside official channels is often a scam. If you’ve been scammed, report it to reportfraud.ftc.gov.
