Alert : Fake SMS About Unpaid Toll

Updated on 27 June 2025.

Fake unpaid toll SMS messageA new scam is spreading: fraudsters send SMS messages claiming you owe an unpaid toll, urging you to click a link to pay immediately. Stay vigilant—here’s how to spot and avoid the trap.

Smishing: Toll Payment SMS Scam

This scam involves receiving an SMS informing you of unpaid toll fees and demanding urgent payment.

How it works

Scammers send SMS that mimic real toll agencies (logo, official tone). The message states you owe a fee and contains a link to a fake website. Entering your payment details allows criminals to steal your data.
Warning signs: Unusual URL, alarming tone (“immediate payment required”), unsolicited message, especially if you haven’t recently used a toll road.

Some tips:

  • 🔗 Never click on a link in an unexpected SMS.
  • 📞 Contact your toll operator directly via their official website or customer service.
  • ⚠️ Never share your banking information by text.
  • 🚫 Forward suspicious SMS to your carrier’s spam service (7726 in US/UK) and delete it.
  • 📚 Inform your friends and especially older relatives, as they are often targeted.

Conclusion

If you get this type of message, don’t respond or click any link. Report the scam to your provider or via official platforms, and warn those around you. For more info on how to protect yourself and react to online scams, read our Consumer Guide.
