Alert : Fake Chrome, Edge and Firefox updates – how to avoid malware installation
Updated on 20 December 2025.
Over the past few days, a new fraud attempt has been circulating: messages imitate Chrome, Edge or Firefox and claim that an “urgent update” is required.
Stay alert: here is how to spot it and avoid the traps.
Fake browser updates (Chrome / Edge / Firefox)
Windows claim that your browser is outdated or compromised and push you to install a supposed update.
The modus operandi
Scammers spread banners, pop-ups or sponsored ads displaying an alarming alert with a “Update now” button.
Their goal is to make you download a fake installer that may contain a stealer, remote access tool (RAT) or a banking Trojan.
Warning signs : highly urgent wording (“immediate”, “critical”), an unfamiliar page that only “roughly” resembles the browser, forced downloads outside the official website, extensions/files with strange names, requests for unusual permissions.
Some advice:
- 🛑 Do not click “Update now” from a pop-up or banner.
- 🌐 Only update via the browser’s official menu (Settings → About / Update).
- 📥 If a site forces a download, close the tab and restart your browser.
- 🧩 Check and remove unknown or recently added extensions.
- 🛡️ Run an antivirus/antimalware scan if you have downloaded or executed a file.
Conclusion
If you encounter this type of alert, ignore it and do not download anything from the displayed page.
Report the attempt if you are targeted, and warn friends or colleagues to prevent further victims.
