Alert : SIM Swap Account Takeover Scam

Updated on 14 August 2025.

SIM Swap Account Takeover ScamCybercriminals hijack your phone number by fraudulently obtaining a new SIM card in your name, allowing them to access your bank, social media, and messaging accounts protected by SMS authentication. Learn how to protect yourself from this sophisticated scam.

SIM Swap Fraud

A fraudster impersonates you to your mobile provider and gets a replacement SIM card. All your calls and texts are redirected, making it easier to hack your online accounts.

How the Scam Works

Scammers collect your personal data (via phishing or data leaks) and contact your carrier pretending to be you. Once the new SIM is active, they receive your SMS codes and break into your bank and social profiles.
Warning signs: sudden loss of mobile signal, unusual authentication notifications, account changes you didn’t request.

Tips:

  • 🔐 Enable two-factor authentication using app-based or hardware methods, not just SMS.
  • 📞 Contact your provider immediately if you lose network access unexpectedly.
  • 🕵️‍♂️ Watch out for suspicious requests for personal information.
  • 🚫 Never share security codes or ID documents online.
  • 📢 Warn your friends and family about this risk.

Conclusion

A stolen phone number can have serious consequences. Always use secure authentication and protect your sensitive accounts beyond SMS.
