Alert : Fake Tax Services and Refund Scams

Updated on 9 September 2025.

Tax Refund ScamAs tax season approaches, fraudulent emails and SMS are spreading, pretending to come from the IRS (US) or HMRC (UK). They promise refunds or claim unpaid taxes to trick taxpayers. Here’s how to avoid the scam.

Fake Tax Authorities

Scammers impersonate official services (IRS, HMRC, etc.), perfectly copying logos and forms. Their goal is to steal your personal and banking data or push you to make fake payments.

How it works

Victims receive alarming emails or SMS: either a “refund” is promised or urgent tax debt is claimed. Clicking the link redirects to a fake official site designed to harvest sensitive information.
Red flags: unexpected refund promise, urgent tone, suspicious email address, or links to non-official sites.

Tips:

  • 🔍 Always check the sender’s email and website domain.
  • 🚫 Never click on suspicious links or attachments.
  • ☎️ Contact the IRS or HMRC directly if in doubt.
  • 💳 Only enter banking information on the official tax authority website.
  • 📢 Warn family and colleagues to prevent more victims.

Conclusion

Never share sensitive data via email or SMS related to taxes. Report fraud at reportfraud.ftc.gov (US) or actionfraud.police.uk (UK).
