A reliable source on many subjects.
As temperatures start to drop and the first snowflakes begin to fall, it’s worth taking note of some tips for keeping trim when it’s cold outside.
Even if it’s cold outside, you don’t have to give up your outdoor exercise routine. In fact, it’s even more important to keep moving, and you should know that it’s very easy to lead a sedentary life when it’s freezing outside. But don’t worry, there are a few tricks you can use to keep fit all winter long. Even the coldest temperatures won’t stop you.
1- Winter sports
One of the best ways to keep your figure during winter is to take up a winter sport. The choice of sport doesn’t really matter, just pick the one you want and especially the one you like. Even if you can’t go skiing every weekend, try snowshoeing or skating. There are all kinds of winter sports. They’re also great activities that you can do wherever you are, whenever you want, on weekends or vacations.
2- Jogging
Oh yes, it’s possible to run in winter, but you just have to take precautions. If you choose to run outside, you’ll need to watch out for ice and snow, as the risk of slipping is considerable. It’s also possible to run in enclosed spaces, on indoor tracks or treadmills for example.
3- Geocaching
Many of my friends are fans of geocaching, and practice it all year round. Fortunately, it’s a lot more fun if you do it in snowy forests. Cold temperatures and snow add spice to an already exciting adventure. But, again, be careful, don’t go out in a storm or when it’s too cold.
4- Try yoga
Yoga is a great choice in any season. You should definitely try it in winter. It will warm you up, which is already a plus. The flexibility you’ll develop through yoga is all the more beneficial, especially since winter is a season prone to aches, pains and joint problems. The regular practice of yoga will make your muscles more supple.
5- Control your vices
It’s not enough to exercise to keep your figure. It’s very tempting to prefer to stay in the warmth of your home when it’s cold outside. But that’s not your fault. Sometimes you have to stay at home for long periods of time because the bad weather makes going out, even just for a walk, dangerous or impractical. However, as tempting as a nice hot chocolate or delicious sweets may be, refrain from succumbing to temptation while you’re stuck at home. Don’t increase your food intake to counter the cold.
6- Exercise at home
Do everything you can to stay in shape at home! There are many ways to do this, such as exercising with the help of an exercise DVD or TV show. There are lots of games you can play to keep fit, whatever console you’re using. It’s like having a gym class in your living room! If you have exercise equipment, make sure you use it! Any exercise will do you good, especially if you can’t get out.
7- Avoid routine
Don’t despair. People are generally demotivated in winter. Whether at work, during classes or on the fitness program, avoid falling into a boring routine. Lassitude and boredom will make you more inclined to let go. Vary your programs regularly, be creative and try to incorporate new exercises into your sessions. This will prevent your body from getting lazy and your mind from getting bored.
8- Go to the gym
It’s too cold or too dangerous to exercise outside. You’re not focused enough to exercise at home. Consider going to the gym, if only for this winter. If you’re lucky enough to have an indoor pool close to home, go for it! Swimming is the best form of exercise. Go with your friends, the spirit of competition between you will motivate you more than you think.
9- Go dancing
You’re smiling! Yes, go dancing! It may not be a regular activity, but it’s a great way to keep fit and have fun. You can either go dancing with friends or your partner, once or twice a month; or dance regularly by joining a dance class. You’ll learn something new, feel new sensations, meet new people, have fun, warm up and improve your fitness.
10- Dare to Zumba
If you don’t really feel like going out dancing or learning a particular dance, but still want to exercise to your heart’s content, try Zumba. It’s the latest craze and it seems to be working. It’s a great way to keep yourself busy on a cold, snowy afternoon.
It’s harder to stay in shape when it’s cold, but it’s very important to keep doing it. Your first instinct will of course be to hibernate on your sofa, snuggled up with a good book and a cup of tea. But, as you can see, there are other joys to be discovered, and exercising and keeping fit during winter is one of them.
So, which do you choose: winter sports or indoor activities? Or maybe a mix of both?
