Online dating scamDating sites and apps are hugely popular. But behind the search for love or companionship, many scammers use fake profiles and romance scams to trick people. These scams can cost victims dearly, both financially and emotionally.

Here’s how they work and how to protect yourself.

How do these scams work?

Fraudsters create fake profiles on popular platforms such as Tinder, Bumble, Match, or even on social networks.
Their goal is not to date, but to manipulate and get money.

Typical scenario:

  • A charming profile quickly grabs attention.
  • The conversation becomes filled with flattering and emotional words.
  • The scammer invents a dramatic story (illness, accident, being stranded abroad).
  • They then ask for urgent financial help (bank transfer, gift cards, cryptocurrency).
  • Once money is sent, the fake lover disappears.

Warning signs to watch out for

  • Too-perfect profiles with stolen or professional photos.
  • Declarations of love too quickly after only a few messages.
  • Refusal of video calls or in-person meetings.
  • Repeated money requests with urgent excuses.
  • Language inconsistencies that don’t match their claimed identity.

How to protect yourself on dating sites?

  • Check profile photos using reverse image search (Google Images, TinEye).
  • Never share financial details or personal documents.
  • Refuse to send money, no matter the reason.
  • Meet in person in a public place before committing.
  • Report suspicious profiles directly on the platform.

If you are a victim

  • Keep all evidence (screenshots, messages, receipts).
  • Report to the police or Report Fraud (UK) / FTC (US).
  • Contact the platform to remove the fraudulent profile.
  • Talk to family or friends to avoid emotional isolation.
