Curved cucumberCurved penis, twisted penis, deformed sex, bent penis… so many expressions to describe one and the same abnormal condition of the male genital tract! Yes, ladies aren’t directly affected by this medical condition… but they may well suffer from it, if their partner does too.

The statistics aren’t precise, because this is a type of illness that men don’t dare talk about. Lately, however, there’s been a gradual “loosening up”, with news that between 1% and 3% of the male population suffer from curved penis syndrome. What exactly is it? How is it diagnosed? What causes it? What are the consequences? Are there any treatments? These are just some of the questions we’ll be answering.

Curved penis: definition of the phenomenon

Curved penis is a description that refers to an abnormal state of the male sex, where it is clearly deformed compared to a normal straight state. By definition, a penis is straight when erect. However, some men’s penises are curved either upwards, downwards, or on one side.
Before we go any further, we’ll need to differentiate between three types of condition where a penis could end up curved, or twisted:

Congenital curvature

Many people live with a penis that’s already curved, without it causing them the slightest problem! So much the better…
As long as the man’s sex life is fulfilling enough, and the couple doesn’t complain about the “unsightly” deformation of the penis, it’s all good!

Penis fracture

Comical penis fracture

We’re laughing! There’s never been a bone in a penis! LOL

Yes, a fracture… that’s right, a fracture! We all know that there are no bones in a man’s penis, but it just so happens that it can suffer what we call a fracture.
For one reason or another, the penis can be twisted during sexual intercourse.

For example, under the weight of a partner on top of it, a penis may at some point go off course and bend. Two things can happen then:

  • You suffer horribly, of course. But the penis soon recovers its normal state and is out of danger;
  • You suffer hyper-horribly, but this time a hematoma forms very quickly on the penis. Blood circulates in the ruptured penile tissue and swells everywhere. It’s an emergency!

The good news is that, if medical intervention is carried out in time (maximum 4 hours after the incident), things go back to normal and the penis becomes operational again!

La Peyronie’s disease

Named after François Gigot de Lapeyronie, first surgeon and confidant of King Louis XV in 1743, La Peyronie’s disease can be summed up as the appearance of one or more fibrous plaques in the envelope of the cavernous bodies of the penis: the albuginea. This condition, also known as plastic induration of the corpora cavernosa, is responsible for an accentuated curvature of the penis, all too visible to the naked eye on an erect member.

In this third case, we’re talking about a twisted penis that’s cause for serious concern.
So you’ll understand that our article will focus exclusively on LaPeyronie’s disease.

The causes of LaPeyronie’s disease

Although the disease was first discovered in the 18th century, it has taken centuries to shed all (or almost all) light on it.

Lapeyronie Plaque Penis diseaseIndeed, it wasn’t until the years 2000-2005 that epidemiological studies found that the prevalence of bent penis disease had been grossly underestimated: in fact, it affects between 3.2% and 8.9% of the male population. The risk increases with age, and is estimated at 7% after the age of 50. However, this disease is not confined to older men: it also affects a significant proportion of men aged 25. That said, at the first sign of the disease, you know what you need to do!

As far as the causes of curved penis disease are concerned, it seems that everyone has come to agree on the same scenario:

It would be the cumulative sum of repeated micro-traumas during sexual intercourse, which would have impacted the state of the albuginea. This envelope of the cavernous bodies of the penis, whose elasticity enables the penis to become erect, is said to have undergone poor healing, eventually leading to a certain rigidity that causes curvature.

Apart from a few rare references to hereditary antecedents, this seems to be the only plausible explanation valid for the causes of a curved penis.

Warning: As in the scenario of a penis fracture, a violent action exerted on the penis could well lead to a rupture of the albuginea and thus to LaPeyronie’s disease!

As a reminder, the albuginea is a dense, white envelope of connective tissue (containing a large quantity of supporting proteins) surrounding certain genital organs such as the testicle, ovary, corpora cavernosa and corpus spongiosum. Albuginitis is the term used to describe inflammation of the albuginea.

Symptoms of LaPeyronie’s disease

There are probably two main symptoms:

The main symptom is the curvature of the penis itself. With the naked eye, it’s easy to detect the deformation when the penis is erect. At rest, it’s quite difficult to notice. However, in certain cases, the curvature of the penis can sometimes be detected at rest, with a tendency to shortening.

Generally speaking, the curvature is “dorsal”: the curved penis tends to move upwards. But it’s quite possible for the curvature to go in other directions.

The second symptom is the pain that accompanies the deformation of the curved penis. This pain is transitory and disappears after a few months, but in some cases it can last longer. It may even appear in the absence of curvature, in the very early stages of the disease.

In some reported cases, there is even a lack of rigidity during erection, which can end in erectile dysfunction.

Vigilance is therefore called for!

The consequences of bent penis disease

In addition to the physical pain a bent penis can cause a man during intercourse, the psychological impact of this condition can be far more devastating.

We all know that a penis is what defines a man’s very essence, and that he attaches great importance to it when it comes to his self-image.

A curved penis could well be a real problem for a certain percentage of the men concerned. It’s a condition that affects everything that’s most intimate about a person, especially a male.

Probleme Peyronie Homme

Men suffering from curved penis often focus on their condition and lose confidence in their ability to perform sexually. While some men are able to live with a curved penis, others are more prone to serious psychological repercussions. It is therefore imperative to combine a certain amount of psychological care with medical treatment for crooked penis disease.

Treatments available to straighten a bent penis

Before moving on to treatment, let’s talk a little about diagnosis. There is no specific or systematic examination for LaPeyronie’s disease. When a patient decides to consult his general practitioner, the latter will be able to redirect him to a specialized urologist, who will examine him according to two scenarios:

  • by asking the patient to take photos of his resting and erect sex, from the front and in profile;
  • by inducing an erection by injecting prostaglandin into the curved penis, and assessing the situation directly and visually.

If the curved penis in question represents a real handicap, the following treatments are required:

No treatment

the doctor suggests waiting and seeing if the curvature resolves. This happens in some cases, by the way. However, he will prescribe a vitamin E-based treatment. Note that this treatment is more likely to work if taken at the very beginning of the early detection of the disease: after a certain time, vitamin E would be useless!

Plaque defragmentation

Regular injections of cortisone into the plaque. In particular, a certain degree of efficacy seems to have been observed with regard to recalcitrant pain.
Treatments to fragment the plaque using traction or shock waves.

Surgeon

There are two surgical options:

straightening the curved penis

There are two possibilities: either the shorter side of the penis is lengthened, or the longer side is shortened, so that the penis is the same length everywhere. In both cases, you can expect to lose a few centimetres in length, or to lose sensitivity in certain parts of the penis. When the sclerotic plaques are located at the top of the trunk, the operation is a little more delicate, because of the network of nerves in this area.

Penile implant

Prescribed when Lapeyronie’s disease causes erectile difficulties, or when the deformation of the penis is complex.

These surgical procedures are performed under general or locoregional anesthesia, with a hospital stay of 48 hours or more. The patient can gradually resume sexual relations after a few weeks, with follow-up by the urological surgeon.

Serious alternatives for curved penis treatment

Far from scalpels and other chemical injections or shock waves, it seems that there are less invasive solutions for treating penis curvature.
Like vitamin E and other injectable products, there are dietary supplements formulated with natural ingredients to improve blood circulation in the penis and thus help fight plaque.

A good example is Neprinol.

A more “mechanical” solution has been in the news for some years now: penis extenders. It also seems that certain types of extensor are genuinely useful for treating a curved penis. Several testimonials from users and doctors alike support the idea of the effectiveness of these extenders in treating LaPeyronie’s disease.

Here are just a few examples:

SizeGenetics
Phallosan Forte
